Tuomas Linna borrows the identity of an Ingusethian man, Omar, when writing his doctoral thesis on immigrants in Finland. Disguised as Omar, he meets Hanne, a Finnish language teacher, and falls in love with her. Hanne falls in love with Omar too, and Tuomas can’t bring himself to tell her the truth straight away.
As Tuomas tries to impress her as his own undisguised self, the tables are totally turned through a series of awkward misunderstandings. Hanne regards Tuomas as a racist redneck and ends up hating him, while falling more and more passionately in love with Omar.
Before the truth comes out, the past of the real Omar gets a stranglehold on Tuomas, and he finds himself caught up in Omar’s tangle of relationships. Believed to be Omar, Tuomas is kidnapped to the Ostrobothnian backwoods where preparations are underway for the real Omar’s wedding.
The Loan Rangers, an ethnic baseball team led by Tuomas’s friend Mahmud Murslan, hurries over to rescue Tuomas from his plight, and Hanne’s love for Omar/Tuomas is put to test as the web of misunderstandings and white lies begins to uncoil.
